Heavy pond planting around the edges will force him to reach further and shield the fish hopefully keeping them in deeper water.
If a dogs sense of smell is so good, why do they need to get so close to the other dogs butt?

There can't be a pond keeper, of any size, who hasn't had a 'fish security check' by a heron. Believe me, they don't need a runway to land in your garden, I've seen them do a near vertical take off a helicopter pilot would be proud of too.
I was told by a pond store assistant someone told them they taste quite nice. It's only when you see a fish that you've had years become food that you love for members of nature can change.
I've also known people who called it a day for this reason, loosing fish they're had for years without heron problems suddenly had an inspection and didn't want a fishing trawler net repair business over their pond. I can see their point.

The "problem" with an "electric fence" (as I see it) is that a heron doesn't know it's an electric fence :| so will it not treat it as any other fence?

Morning Tony,
I have a vague recollect of us covering this a few years back.
Can’t find the thread at the moment.
If I recall correctly there is no law regarding them on private property as the animal welfare act 2006 declared that they were not harmful to wildlife.
Opinions were split regarding that decision at the time and I’m sure it’s the same today.
If a dogs sense of smell is so good, why do they need to get so close to the other dogs butt?
