Where have they gone?

Post by Shinamae » May 25th, 2024, 1:30 pm

About three weeks ago, I had three frogs and one newt in my pond. I have seen nothing now for three weeks where an earth have they gone or are they just hiding that? Such a lot of hiding places in my pond? So many water soldiers?
I am quite perplexed by this

The frogs have probably hopped it.

It is nice when you have frogs in your pond, but I have never successfully got them to sign a tenancy agreement, so they are free to stay and free to go. :D
Despite what most people think, frogs don't reside in ponds, they are only found in ponds during mating season, or for the occasional dip. They prefer to reside in long grass / under things (upturned plant pot saucer, big stone etc.) They do like it damp. Although they do travel looking for food, and if they find somewhere more suitable, they will stay there. The best time to look for them is dusk. If it helps, I have newts this and last year, no frogs. (Yet)

I was down the O.A.P club, garden centre, today and there was a chap who was talking about a grass snake near his pond, dog was barking at the pond edge. Frogs are on the menu for snakes.
Could be ?

It’s even longer now and no sign of newts or frogs. I am terribly disappointed. 😬

Looking at your lovely pond, I cannot believe it is anything you are doing wrong and that their absence is down to external factors probably outside of your control.

New cat or other predator on the block or perhaps one of your neighbours has created a 5 star boutique aquaphibian hotel that they have all flocked to en masse. :)

I've just had another look at your picture. Frogs and newts don't like gravely edges. Maybe a change to grass or even fake grass with some top soil sweeped on it might help.

Compared to the mating time we have few frogs. Only occasionally are they seen. Hopefully they are fully occupied eating slugs. When they are spawning we may have say 40 I assume they go into other gardens during summer and only return to mate/spawn. I didn't thing any of the spawn had hatched until a couple or so weeks ago during rain there were hundreds hopping around about 10mm in size. Really difficult to walk for fear of treading on some.
