Electricity - The real costs

Post by Eggo » August 30th, 2017, 7:15 pm

Electricity is 'sold' in KwH's, this is the quantity of Kw required in one hour. Therefore a 1000w appliance will consume 1Kw every hour it is on and a 500w appliance would take two hours to consume 1 KwH.

In basic terms if you left appliances on 24/7 it would cost the following based on 13p per KwH

1000w - 13p per hour - £3.12 per day - £21.84 per week - £1135.68 per year

500w - 6.5p per hour - £1.56 per day - £10.92 per week - £567.84 per year

250w - 3.25p per hour - 78p per day - £5.46 per week - £283.92 per year

100w - 1.3p per hour - 31.2 p per day - £2.18 per week - £113.57 per year

50w - 0.65p per hour - 15.6p per day - £1.14 per week - £56.78 per year

25w - 0.325 p per hour - 7.8p per day - 57p per week - £28.39 per year

15w - 0.195p per hour - 4.68p per day - 32.7p per week £17.04 per year

10w - 0.13p per hour - 3.12p per day - 21.8p per week - £11.36 per year

5w - 0.065p per hour - 1.56p per day - 10.9p per week - £5.68 per year

As thermostats are used diversity must be taken into account (as they periodically turn on and off). This could reduce the bill by a further 40% on average. Another very good reason for using them, they will pay for them selves in a matter of weeks!

The figures above are based on the appliances being on 24/7 and not thermostatically controlled
The calculate your approx bill note how many KwH's you use every day for 1 week (check the meter reading everyday at the same time, this is important). the difference between the two readings will be how many KwH's you used that day (average UK house around 12-15 KwH's). Add all seven days figures together and then divide by 7 this will give you the average daily use. Multiply this figure by how frequently you pay your bill i.e 183 days for 6 monthly billing date. Be aware more electricity is used in the winter months.

Hope this helps people understand how much it costs to keep exotic pets.

I know 'all too well' how much it costs to keep exotic pets
average KWH in my house is 53.8 a day
If a dogs sense of smell is so good, why do they need to get so close to the other dogs butt?

I have a smart meter that tells me exactly how much I've used on gas and electricity every day- in kWh and ££. It was free, just had to ask my energy supplier to come and install it. Means no one has to read my meters or estimate my bill any more.
