I suppose if I wasnt used to handling big birds at work then I might have been more worried. He was much easier to deal with than a swan
He was lucky it was your pond he got tangled in. I wouldn't have a clue....and things like john's experience would loom in my mind!

That was a fascinating story Feline, with photographs too as an added bonus!

I think I'm with CFC here though, wouldn't fancy disentangling a modern day Pteradactyl inside my pond but the fishing line will have to stay as a deterrent. They are very impressive looking creatures and beautiful too but I just wish they'd go and look beautiful away from my ponds now although I couldn't willingly harm one . . . . . . unless it had one of my goldies in its beak! :x

They are protected so you're not allowed to harm them anyway. He was an incredible looking bird. Can't blame him for coming looking for breakfast really!

Had 2 today. A weekend of torrential rain has flooded the N. Broads so I should have expected it. Thought we were safe but in the construction of the new veggi filter (still not in play  ) we have inadvertently created a ledge that was landable on. Only victim so far appears to be a large grass carp who is bloody and bruised but atmo appears ok.

Herons are stunning, but only when not around the fish! Luckily my garden is too small for a bird with that wingspan to land! I was practicing Archery once by the grandparents pond and saw a heron go by, I hope that put him off!

On a similar topic, has anyone ever had an issue with a Buzzard? I was told when that Heron went past that a Buzzard took an Asagi from the pond and proceded to eat it on the pond wall only a week after they bought it. I think if they had caught it harm could have been done!
