Chemical reaction by adding Sodium Bicarbonate and Chlorine granules in Hot Tub

Post by dr justin yip » August 4th, 2019, 5:07 pm

I have clean my hot tub today and fill it up with well water, pH reading 5.8
Is there any chemical reaction likely occur by adding Sodium Bicarbonate and Chlorine at the same time ?

you keep using that crappy well water it gives you nothing but problems ,im not sure about any interaction but I suppose some pondkeepers have added sb to chlorinated tap water used to top up pond . :dunno: :dunno:

I may be speaking out of turn here but I've had that sort of day! Working on a psychiatric ward can do that for you.
I doubt that humans wallowing in a hot pool will be adversely affected by a pH of just under neutral so I don't understand why you feel it necessary to add bicarb.
Your fish on the other hand, not to mention any beneficial aquatic bacteria, will notice it, breathe it and be stuck in it for life.
Your pond is huge, use your bicarb to good effect to achieve and maintain a steady pH, monitor this and let things settle. No more fish, no more well water dilutions. Your apparent evaporation rate seems far too large for a hot summer in Wales, I lose hardly anything to evaporation, ever, it's always something else, and I have a multitude of something elses.

You have a fabulous pond and you will, in time, have fabulous fish, including I hope my 2 sturgeon who need a wonderful home before my pond collapses, but you need to let it develop and mature. :hug:

Last early year I use tap water to fill up my pond and hot tub without experiencing any issue, of course I have to add some chlorine into the hot tub.

Having talked to my neighbors who lived in the village for over 50 more years, 3 generations live in this village, widely use well water for daily consumption and local well contractor, I was told that well water is good for my pond and plants and daily consumption. Therefore I decided to dig a well and use it for my pond and plants only. Filling up hot tub is a kind of experiment to see whether I could feel the different between using tap water and well water. Neighbor said well water contain some mineral so it is good for health. :oops:

Due to my careless mistake and lack of knowledge, I do not realize that the pH of well water is so acid that as a result, affect my pond and risk the life of my fish. Luckily with help of expert from this forum, I manage to correct my mistake and the water reading is in safety range now.

High evaporation rate daily due to the following reasons I think:

I have a waterfall and 3 outlets returning water to the pond above the water surface 24/7;
My pond has a huge surface area and without any shelter at all, facing east, south and west;
My area has a bit strong wind and my house located near hill top;
My pond has a infinitive about 13 ft long and the pond water pours down to the tank just like a huge waterfall.

won't harm you, but could shorten the life of the metal components in the hot tub if the pH is always that,

when you say you dug a well, you mean you got a contractor in and the thing is built to code and an abstraction charge is being paid as opposed to you played roughneck and sunk a well with out consent?

I got a contractor to build the well located in my back garden, dug 250 ft deep below the surface.
Contractor told me that I didn't have to inform welsh water authority or council about doing this, provided that I did not connect the well water to my main water pipe.
