Duckweed

Post by DaveD » August 14th, 2015, 10:16 pm

I have a significant problem with duckweed that just wont go no matter how much I net out. Does anyone have a recommendation for a sturgeon and Koi friendly chemical treatment.
thanks

I suggest you bag it up and send it to Simon who loves it

On a more serious note there is a product called Eco Pond duckweed control which says it has bacteria in it. But you might be better to put some floating weed and water mint/water cress in to compete with it as part of your management program.

Have you got a good flow of air in, I would have thought it wouldn't have liked the disturbance that much?

Removing nutrients from the pond and disturbing the water are going to be the safest things to try , if you haven't already.

I'm sure some of our sturgeon specialists will be along soon to give any specific sturgeon safe chemical related recommendations that might work.

I swear they'll eat ANYTHING, I expect they'll start leaping out of the water next to consume the iris.

dont get any grass carp then
If a dogs sense of smell is so good, why do they need to get so close to the other dogs butt?

Thanks CFC
Yes loads of air from an Oase OxyTex Set 2000 CWS Pond Aerator and Air Pump which does disturb the water and a stream / waterfall which does too. No filter though. I've pulled two bucket loads of the stuff out this weekend (which Simon is welcome to) I shall try some other floating weed and see if that helps.

I just got some watercress into mine (though I don't have a duckweed problem, I had a bit at one time but the goldfish ate it) to aid in my fight against blanketweed. I bought a bag of watercress, put it in a tray of water and after two weeks it was rooted and has just gone into the pond tucked in a corner.
I can't understand why you have a problem as youve got a good amount of movement, duckweed is supposed to find water disturbance unwelcoming.

PS did you say you had no filter? How big is your pond?

PPS we have quite a few sturgeon specialists, I'm sure one of them will see this thread tomorrow and offer any sturgeon specific advice.
