large wild life pond

Post by andycrosse » August 24th, 2025, 12:12 pm

Hello everyone-new here

We have recently bought a property with a disused mill pond, its currently completly hiden by self seeded trees and bushs. yesterday was a bit of a shock when i forced my way through to find boardering what id class as a small lake
if we were to use the whole area i think it would easily cover 40m x 6-8m
but its more likely to be 20m-25m long

as a mill there is a local stream but the feed to our pond is now redundent and not on our land. so are looking to ignore the origianl feed and use the local stream water to fill and top up where necessary

the area is deep with soft debris, went with a spade in hand yesterday and gave up at 1m depth of debris.becasue its so soft im thinking we dont clear the site, but landscape the area for shelving areas. ill have to blank of the outlet end substantially to prevent it giving way and flooding our new neighbours.

im not sure if there should be any form of filtration(uv-phosphate remover....)

never had a pond, but so far ive found many many native plants, im going to have to be so careful of using native as the stream is very close to the pond.
will be totaly fish free

going to be a long slow project but welcome any advice or ideas.

andy

Don't go single handed to your pond. Have a lifebuoy on display nearby..
Did you buy this property blind ?

no not blind, but very short time to buy.
the propery was at auction, we saw it 2 weeks before were going on holiday, the auction was actualy the day we flew back.
dream site for me, derelict old pumping station. i work in construction so im pretty clued up on issues.
currently have bats in the building, asbestos roof, vast amounts of under ground pipes and man holes. a large reseroir
got to have ecology people involved at every step.
im an mcs registered electrician so the site will be covered in pv solar and slate roof, the price when installing new is not that much different. there is talk of potencial hyro electric- something to look into, also because of the stream have potencial of having water source heating pump, much more efficient than air. air being 1kw in - 3-4kw out water 1kw in 5-6kw out.

Totally jealous!
Place looks amazing

Best advise for pond is ask questions then they pop into your head
It can get overwhelming trying to take it all in at once, and you have your hands full with the restoration works.

Start with water tests from a liquid test kit I suspect the parameters to be perfect as it hasn't been disturbed for years and nature is the best housekeeper given time.

We can look at clearing on a steady basis to maintain that balance
If a dogs sense of smell is so good, why do they need to get so close to the other dogs butt?
