Pond Re-build flooding!

Post by MrC » July 13th, 2014, 8:46 pm

Hi, I've started digging my larger pond, it will be 4m x 2.5m x 1m, with 0.6m below the ground and 0.4m above. I'm looking to put a 4" concrete base on 2" hardcore, then using 7n blocks upright. I'm finding that I'm getting a lot of water in the base. We have had a lot of rain recently but I think I maybe at the water table level at 0.75m depth. I am pumping out the water on a regular basis and was wondering what my options are if it stays wet.

Thanks

MrC

Hi

I am no expert but have read of peeps digging a sump hole by the base around 18 " down and added a sump pump on a float switch so as soon as it fills up ( lowest point so will fill up first ) the pump kicks in and and gets rid of the ground water .

Google will be your friend if you search sump pumps and float switchs although at this time of the year it will probably dry out :dunno:

Are you planning to use liner or fibreglass when it's done?
It could cause you some problems if the water table is higher than the pond base in the future, especially with a liner which could rise up off the pond base if water builds up behind it. I'm actually not sure how to tell where a water table level is myself, maybe someone else knows!

I'm looking to use a liner. I am replacing a smaller pond that had a liner to the same depth which was in place for 5 years. I remember back filling the previous excavation as water was present then.

I'll have a search on google. It did rain all day long last Thursday, so I'm hoping it will dry out.

Thanks for your input

I had the same issue when digging my pond. If I left it for a couple of days or it rained I had a mini pond to deal with before continuing. Just pump it out and carry on digging. once the liner is in you won't have any more problems. The weight of the water on top of the liner will be enough to keep it in place. I had a 6 inches of water all over my garden last year during the floods and the liner was just fine. My pond is 1.2M deep with 600mm below ground and 600mm above.

Hopefully it was just due to the heavy rain you had and the ground was too hard to soak it up properly so it all ended up in your pond.
There's nothing worse than having to dig in wet mud is there?
It rained when I was digging mine and I ended up getting mud everywhere both outdoors and in the house, and the lawn took a bit of a hammering too.
