Thanks for the advice, any preferences on kit to use with a liner?

Will this one work with a liner? Appears to have screws through two plates, guessing that is to trap it?

EDIT: And sorry for derailing your thread! Should I start another instead?

Hi Tek-monkey

As i understand it. you have the bottom drain, this needs a coating of mastic, the liner goes onto this after carefully cutting out the hole, you then attach the clamp ring with 8 or so screws after putting more mastic above the liner between the clamp ring, you then need the mastic to go off before adding water and the top dome. simples...

I've read this forum for a few weeks now, is there a post that explains a typical set up. I ask because i'm not far off of the digging stage and would like to know what is the best way to set up my pond.

I am going for the gravity feed bottom drain with a vortex to add to my multi bay filter. this is not ideal due to water volumes, but i don't want to spend mega bucks just yet. I also have a 25w UV and a 5,000 litre pump.

I don't understand the skimmer set up, but was looking to build in a skimmer and blank it off until the spring, any advice on this would be most welcome.

In the long term, i'm probably looking to replace the multi bay with a bead filter and the the vortex with a sieve.

After spending a lot on the pond build which was basically unplanned, i want to hold back where i can.

Thanks in advance

Further to my earlier post. I'm looking for advice on my setup. I've gone from a pond around 1,000 gallons [estimate] to one of around 3,800 gallons. I currently am using a KCFibreglass 1,000 gallon multi bay unit. Due to cost, I was going to add a vortex to the set up to limp through next year and convert the multi bay to gravity feed, although i'm not sure what this involves. The pond was only going to be 2,500 gallons originally.

I've been told i need a skimmer and that needs a separate pump and filter. What sort of spec will i need.

Thanks

I'm just starting my build now. It seems a few people use an Eazy Pod on their skimmer for filtration. I will be putting one in but will probably blank it off for now to keep the initial pond build cost down a little.

Eazypod air, 55w UV, Superfish Eco 8000 and an aerated bottom drain all sat in the garage because I don't have a garden yet!

There's all sorts of options with skimmers, but built into the wall is the way to go with a new pond build. By god I wish I had done this when I built my current pond
Think carefully about the location of it. If you can site it opposite the pond from the main filter return pipe then you can get a nice flow across the surface of the pond into the skimmer. The skimmer can help pond circulation patterns if sited well.

Because skimmers will often be dealing with most of the large debris such as leaves you ideally want something that can filter those things out whole rather than chopping them up. For that reason if you can plumb the bottom outlet of the skimmer straight into something like a gravity fed sieve it's absolutely ideal. After the sieve you have a pump which can send the water back in any way you like to the pond, midwater return, waterfall, a choice of either with ball valves in the lines even better. You can even pump the water to your main biological filter if you've got the capacity to deal with the extra flow there. I would personally keep the skimmer line separate, and make good use of it to install the UV after the pump on this line, and heater too if you're having one. This means you then don't need to have those flow restrictions on the main filter line.

Alternatively you can get skimmers with built in baskets that catch the larger waste, but need very regular emptying.
A gravity fed Eazy pod is certainly an option too, although costs nearly as much as a sieve and to be honest I think for this purpose a sieve is better designed to do the job.

I've seen some nifty setups using things like the Hidroclean canisters on skimmer lines too where space was a big issue. They have a small footprint and are pretty cost effective.
You could even have a vortex settlement chamber on the skimmer line, maybe with brushes in it for some extra mechanical filtration.

Progress report

After what seems ages, I have added the concrete to the collar today. The pond seems to be slowly drying up. We think there are one or two small streams flowing through it that have been interrupted. The base is dryer in the middle. I will lower the central area to try to get the moisture from the edges and to create a slope for the bottom drain.
