There's a programme on channel 4 called The Roman Empire by Train.
In episode 3, it's based in Italy, the presenter was in and around Naples. She said there was over 1500 fountains. When she said that, I thought of you.Have you been to Italy ?
Really interesting series, at least for me. It's where BC is encompassed with today AD.

............well thanks for thinking of me, but it is not how you think. ;)
Of the alleged 1500 fountains you would expect that most would look something like..........

Image
(OK, may be with more statues)

Yes, it's a fountain (video soon) Yes, it's big, and not all fountains are big, but in Italy the majority of the fountains are like/similar to............

Image

(And a lot are just plain spouts  like a pipe at 90 degrees from the wall, pointing down)
The reason is......... they are drinking fountains  yes you can drink from them, and or fill your (more modern idea) water bottle from them, some even have a small hole in the pipe so when you put your thumb over end water comes out from the hole (in a small jet) enabling you to easily drink from it  (As opposed to trying to get your mouth under the 90 degree angled pipe.)
