Dog food

For all the creatures you share your home with that don't have fins and gills.

As an example, my dog weighs 12kg and on the Royal Canin medium adult gets 160g a day (divided into 2 meals).

It costs £43 for 15kg which lasts him 93 days give or take.

So that works out as 46p a day. I spend more than that on milk for the household so I consider it very reasonable really. Obviously the bigger your dog the more it will be, but I reckon people feeding tinned dog foods are generally spending more than I am anyway, for something thats 80% water and made from cheaper ingredients.

so far based on the recommended feed quantities
the pero stuff works out at a pound a day for my staffi
thats 25p more than the bakers so no issue there
but i would be quit happy to double the price knowing it was the right thing to do
If a dogs sense of smell is so good, why do they need to get so close to the other dogs butt?

Thanks Lara

It looks like its going to cost a massive 25 p extra per day to give a better diet

Seems the more people pay the more snobby they are! I'm talking in general, not about people on here before anyone jumps down my throat thinking I mean them!

My inlaws have had labradors for years and always fed bakers complete and always had healthy dogs until they passed away with old age. We started our lab off on food that was costing us almost £40 a month due to what we were being told by people. I decided to do more research and see what was around at what price and these days we feed him Wagg worker dog. 17KG for around £10. He's not overweight, not hyperactive, has a lovely shiny coat, has good stools and always gets a good bill of health at the vets. In addition we mix in 1/2 a tin of tesco supermeat dog food each day. 6 tins for £2.50.
Obviously everyone has to make their own decision as to what they feed their dog but no-one should ever be made to feel bad for buying one of the big cheap brands if there dog doesn't seem to be any the worse for it!

The thing is there is expensive crap that is heavily marketed or inexpensive better stuff!

placed an order for a trial pack of pero staffi food at the back end of last week
what i should have received was a 2kg bag of food, a pack of organic dog treats and a voucher for £5 off my next purchase I paid £7.95 on my card
monday at 10 in the morning i received a text telling me my order would arrive between 11:13 and 12:13, and true to there word it was there in the allotted time
I thought no more about it until today, the wife phoned to say that max enjoyed the food and so did the cats :furious:
then she said to me 'where the hell do you expect me to store it?'
why? I asked 'its no bigger than the normal stuff'
'are you mad?' she replied ' its a massive sack of the stuff'
It turns out they have sent me a 12kg bag by mistake worth almost 30 quid

Now the moral dilemma begins....... Do I tell them?

Yes, the chances are they will thank you for your honesty and tell you to keep it, otherwise they will have to arrange to collect it and that will cost them. As the pack has already been opened they won't be able to resell it (explain that your wife didn't know it was the wrong size pack).

Off Topicnote: the content in this box is not connected with the main topic subject
I had a moral dilema about a month ago (not really :) ) , there was around £200 still in the speed bank machine at the small Tesco direct , it was beeping at me to remove it when i walked past . When i parked up there was a lady using the machine but i did not not much notice at the time but it clicked it was hers so i removed the cash and found her in the shop .

Basically she took the card and receipt but not the cash

She was very grateful / thank full and was a nice lady so all good .

If i found it on the floor in the street i would have kept it ! .... but i knew who this cash belonged to so handed it back

I thought I'd dig this thread back up as we changed food earlier in the year. The cheap stuff did start disagreeing with our lab, we had an awful bout of diarrhoea and got stuck in a loop of taking him off his food to feed chicken and rice then back on his food when his poo was back to normal only to have a repeat. This went on for a couple of weeks before we decided we had to look at alternative foods. In the end we decided to switch him over to a RAW diet and for ease and pre-prepared foods we chose to try Natures Menu raw complete and balanced which are raw meat and veg. http://www.naturesmenu.co.uk/category-raw-meals.aspx It comes in frozen form so our chest freezer now has more dog food than human food in it. From day 1 his poop was wonderful! and he wolfed the lot down and it's the same now having had him on it since January. Additionally we cut out all of his supermarket treats and started buying him bones, raw duck necks, carrots etc. His poop has been consistent ever since and he shows great enthusiasm for meal times! We feed him 900g a day of the Natures Menu which is more than their guide but we found he was losing a lot of weight on their recommended amount. 900g a day is keeping him a healthy weight and shape. It isn't cheap but we buy in bulk from a wholesaler which saves money.

feed ours raw, human quality meat from the butchers, there are guides to show how much of the bone, muscle, fat, offal to feed over the week as some parts should not be feed to often like the Liver due to Vit A toxicity

looks a bit odd pulling up to the house with pigs heads, a bit of horse, some venison etc, as well as using a work bench in the garden to dot he preparation to portion sized bits. , but sorted him out a treat, perfect gut action, better mood and coat
