Hi Gill if there is enough natural food in the pond for the Sturgeon it should be fine ,but I doubt that there is enough in winter so some pellets would be of benefit. Are you able to put them where you could see if the Sturgeon eats them and not your other fish ?.

Hi Gill

Haveing had 2 runty sturgeon (to thick to find pellets or hooked on live food :dunno: ) , if you could get the runty one in a heated set up on his own you could convert him to pellets / allow him to find the pellets in peace on his own .

How big is he/she ? Where abouts are you ?

I put the pics up on here and what i tried to get him to feed ....

Hi Mel no problem your not side tracking the post at all, this post is for all ponds not just Koi.
Basically if your fish are looking for food feed them, let them tell you what they need.It is an old wives tale about food rotting in the Koi's stomach for the simple reason they dont have one  They have one long intestine and what is not digested passes through the fish to be passed out the other end.Small amounts is best at the warmer part of the day removing what is not eaten in say 20 minuets, before it sinks you dont want food rotting on the pond floor.Sturgeon need feeding all year try to feed where you can see if the food has been eaten giving them time to find the food say a couple of hours, and again remove any uneaten food.

Any uneaten food can be put out for the birds it's hard for them in the winter.

Mine are definitely not wanting to come for food but seem to eat it once i am gone as i see no remains.

I wonder if my pond is slightly different to some others who have half in half out with insulation etc as mine not been interested in food for about 1 month or so now, i do feel i should feed them but dont want to cause any issues with them being a novice and all

Mine are still cruising round all day looking for food so I'm still feeding them and not just the orfe but koi, shubunkins, goldfish and tench too! Must be mild weather...
