From what I've read in the internet, females are more plump especially in season, males more torpedo shaped, can't remember which one but one might have slightly different shaped pectoral fins and one has slightly translucent pectoral fins. Another way (I don't think anyone should do it was you can damage the koi easily) is by putting the koi in the bowl when it's in season and turning it over as if it's a female it will appear slightly pink towards the tail fin. Another way is when the male is in season it's gill plates can sometimes appear rough but yet again the male does not always show this. Now sure how much of this is right and wrong so apologies

I was told shape of fish, shape of pecs and feeding habits.
So I just think the fish that float about sucking in 15 pellets at a go - female and the fish that take one pellet and have to do a victory lap - male. However when it comes to hand feeding it was started by 2 deffo girls but was soon adopted by some of my boys. On a similar note I have 6 shubs and 5 goldfish who were 2 years old this spring but nobody spawned ( quite grateful really) so either the pond is not hanky panky friendly or they are all the same sex because I have never known of celibate goldfish
