Origin: South America; Slow flowing rainforest streams and pools. Negro and upper Orinoco River basins.
Adult size: 3.5 cm
Lifespan: 5 years
Sex: During spawning the females are plumper and white eggs may be seen inside the body. Otherwise alike.

Diet: Carnivore; mosquito larvae, flake
Swimming level: Top
Compatibility: Peaceful schooling fish, best kept in groups of six or more. Avoid mixing with aggressive species.
Comments: An aquarium lid is essential as hatchetfish often jump and fly for up to 1.5m. Not the easiest fish to keep, they are delicate and extremely sensitive to water conditions.
